NatCom in the Philippines has participated in the South-East Asia Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Coordination and Capacity Building Workshop held in Makati City in 2008. The event is an Asia-Pacific regional effort to assist UNESCO Member States in the Jakarta Cluster in building additional capacity for ESD leadership, programme coordination and monitoring.
With the participation of 13 ESD focal points from the senior policy level from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Timor Leste, the workshop aimed to
build the ESD leadership and coordination capacity of UNESCO Member States in the Jakarta Cluster. It also geared to “strengthen the political will for ESD at the national level and link and establish support for new and ongoing ESD-related initiatives.” Participants also established conceptual and practical linkages between ESD, EFA, the MDGs, national poverty reduction strategies and UNDAFs (access to quality education and services), among others.
The workshop was jointly organized by UNESCO Jakarta and Bangkok with the cooperation of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines. It was sponsored by the Japanese Funds in Trust.
