SHS Committee, DepED to develop Academic Vocabulary across 10 Levels of Basic Education
The SHS Committee has recently approved the project “Academic Vocabulary Across 10 Levels of Basic Education” which aims to serve as key words for vocabulary development in English and Filipino in all subject areas and for all grade levels in Basic Education. RP ratifies Convention against Doping in Sport

The Philippines ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sport through an Executive Agreement signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on 8 February 2010.

On 17 March 2010, the Philippines deposited with the UNESCO Director-General its instrument of ratification. In accordance with Article 37, the Convention entered into force with respect to the Philippines on the first day of the month following the expiration of a period of one month after the date of deposit of the instrument of ratification, on 1 May 2010.

Natcom, PAPR lead Philosophy Day 2009 in Manila

The SHS Committee, in cooperation with the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters and the Philippine Academy of Philosophical Research (PAPR) organized the Philippine celebration of World Philosophy Day 2009 on 22 November 2009 at the Rizal Conference Hall, St. Raymund’s Building, University of Santo Tomas.


The forum’s panelists, led by Dr. Alfredo Co, President, Philippines Academy of Philosophical Research (PAPR) (seated first from left), underscored the theme of this year’s Philosophy day -- “Philosophy in Dialogue with Cultures.”		Philosophy professors and students from various universities in Metro Manila gathered for the celebration of Philosophy Day 2009 at UST.

Philippine delegates participate in First World Social Science Forum (WSSF)

Some 800 participants, with seven delegates from the Philippines, attended the First World Social Science Forum (WSSF) last 10 to 12 May 2009 in Bergen, Norway.

Led by Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) Executive Director and Philippine Representative to UNESCO Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Programme Dr. Virginia Miralao, the Philippine delegation included Ms. Joanne Agbisit and Ms. Ma. Luisa Fernan of PSSC; Dr. Ruth Rico and Mr. Winifredo Dagli, University of the Philippines; Mr. Clarence Batan, University of Sto. Tomas; and Ms. Rozanno Rufino, National Economic and Development Authority.

Research-Policy Nexus of Labor Migration, Education, and Human Security

The participants discussed the first round table’s topic: Labor Migration and the Philippine Education System: Ensuring Human Security through Human Capital Development

With the support of UNESCO, the La Salle Institute of Governance (LSIG) implemented the Migration, Education, and Human Security Project to develop a policy framework on labor migration, education, and human security.

HIV Focal Person attends Workshop on Education Sector Response to HIV, Drugs and Sexuality

Prof. Grace Reyes-Sumayo, Natcom’s Focal Person for HIV Preventive Education and Ms. Emmy Anne B. Yanga, Natcom’s Development Management Officer II, participated in a workshop on Education Sector Response to HIV, Drugs and Sexuality in Indonesia held at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia from 3 to 4 December 2009. The workshop was organized by UNESCO Office in Jakarta in cooperation with the Atma Jaya Catholic University.

UNESCO Bangkok, Natcom train teachers on Philosophy and Bioethics

Some 300 elementary and secondary teachers, students, Department of Education officials, Philosophy professors and members of the civil society nationwide attended the Training Seminar on “Teaching the Ethics of Science and Technology and Teaching Philosophy in Schools” from 22 to 23 May 2009 at the Pearl Hall of SEAMEO-INNOTECH in Quezon City.
