Collected trash was segregated, put into its respective bags and delivered to the Puerto Galera Academy where they were labeled, weighed and recorded in data cards. These cards were compiled by the events managers who tabulate and submit to the Ocean Conservancy. The latter documents results of clean ups conducted worldwide. The collected trash was sent to a proper dumpsite for disposal.
Clean up results show 247.5 kg of trash gathered with the Red Alimangos getting the heaviest load because of truck tires they recovered. The Purple Pugitas recovered 951 pieces of plastic bags while the other teams collected a cumulative amount of 413 plastic bags. Results of number of items by type of trash collected show that 87 % of trash was plastic bags and food wrappers, glass, 21.4% and metal, 10.3%.
With the results, the UP MBS conducted a Reduce Reuse Recycle Campaign in partnership with the WWF Philippines, the Puerto Galera Academy and the local government. The UP Medicine Outdoor Society taught high school students the 3Rs, proper hygiene and common myths and fallacies on general health.
In partnership with CDO Foodsphere, the Go Idol, Go R3 environmental tagline was launched and a lecture on the principles of waste reduction conducted.
At the Puerto Galera Academy, a briefing on the importance of mangrove was held prior to on-site planting of mangrove seedlings with the participation of students, residents and local officials.
Puerto Galera was designated Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1973.
