Marine Outreach in Boracay addresses climate change

Climate change may soon take away the source of livelihood of people and communities in marine and coastal areas. Unless imperative measures are taken, the grim possibility may be devastating.

Seeing the urgency of the situation, the National Committee on Marine Sciences has adopted the outreach marine programme to enable more marine and coastal communities to access information and innovation that would enhance cooperation of communities in addressing the negative impact of climate change.

Called the Outreach Marine Programme (OMP), the NCMS initiative involves 15 coastal towns from Basco, Batanes in the north to Surigao  and Zamboanga in the south. Priority attention, however, is likewise directed to Boracay, a premier coastal tourism destination affected by overuse and severe environmental stress where the OMP is also implementing activities.

A multi-sectoral seminar was recently held in Boracay to enlighten stakeholders on methods and techniques on conservation and maintenance of ecological balance on the island’s marine environment. A Training Needs Analysis was  conducted with results used as basis for formulating priority recommendations and actions. Resource persons also discussed systematic management of the economic sustainability of the island.

A comprehensive report and recommendation will soon be submitted to concerned government authorities and NGOs to mobilize concerted action that would address the impact of climate change in Boracay.
