Man and the  Biosphere

           
     

The UNESCO Philippines National Commission participated in the Twentieth Session of the International Coordinating Council (ICC) of the Programme on the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) and  the Third World Congress of Biosphere Reserves  held in Madrid, Spain. UNACOM was represented by  UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme Philippine Representative Dr. Virginia S. Cariño.

Among the topics discussed in the conference included how biosphere reserves can be used for innovative research and capacity building enhancing the role of ecosystem goods and services in development.

It also discussed how biosphere reserves can be used for learning, governance and adaptive management approaches for sustainable development of land and seascapes. The agreements on issues were used as basis for the Madrid Action Plan endorsed by the MAB Bureau and the Organizing Committee for the Madrid events.

Dr. Carino also noted the visit to a biosphere demonstration sites that illustrate sustainable utilization of biosphere reserves for people’s livelihood.
