The Philippine Marine Science Master Plan
A realistic marine science program has been formulated which will contribute to the sound ecological and economic development of the country. The NCMS has framed the Philippine Marine Science Master Plan (PMSMP) which envisions the attainment of an environmentally sustainable economic development through the marine sciences. The proper and effective implementation of this plan is carried out by the inter‑agency Members of the Committee which have been grouped into three areas of concern, namely: 1) marine resources management, 2) marine environmental concerns, and 3) international linkages and training.
The respective areas have as focal points the designated Members of the Committee, to wit:
Subcommittee on Marine Resources and Aquatic Management (SMRM): Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Agriculture
Subcommittee on Marine Environmental Concerns(SMEC): Marine Science Institute , University of the Philippines)
Subcommittee on Linkages and Training(SLT): Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development, DOST
Marine Resources Management
To promote the preservation, conservation, optimum utilization and sustainability of coastal and marine resources in the country through the following strategies:
1.To coordinate activities directly related to the management of coastal and marine resources;
2.To identify and monitor status and problems pertaining to these activities;
3.To collaborate with the other subcommittees in organizing seminars, workshops,and conferences on management concerns; and
4.To encourage and support attendance/participation in national/regional/ international conferences on related topics.
Marine Environmental Concerns
1.To help formulate and implement a long‑range national program for the development marine environmental science in the country;
2.To help formulate plans for the encouragement of academic institutions to include marine environmental concerns in their integrated curricula;
3.To serve as the clearinghouse and extension arm of the NCMS in matters concerning marine environmental problems and issues; and
4.To coordinate with other subcommittees in the integration of information needed in the implementation of the Committee‘s functions.
Linkages And Training
1.To promote marine science in collaboration with concerned institutions;
2.To create public understanding, and appreciation on marine environmental concerns and marine resources management through education and training;
3.To coordinate with the other subcommittees in the integration of information needed in the implementation of the Committee's function.
