NCMS Chairman Dr. Miguel D. Fortes announced the implementation of the NCMS Outreach Marine Programme 2010 in Calauit Island in Palawan.

In preparation for the OMP,  a three-day seminar/workshop was conducted on 03-05 November 2010 in Calauit with multi-sectoral participants representing  the indigenous people, local government units, park managers, the academe, owners of tourism establishments, fisherman’s associations, and operators of the fishing industry, among others. The theme of the event was Enhancing the Development of Calauit Island Through the Marine Sciences.
Philippines participates in Biodiversity and Protected Areas conference
NCMS Chair Dr. Miguel D. Fortes and Puerto Galera Mayor Hubbert Christopher Dolor participated in the International Conference on Biodiversity and Protected Areas held in Jeju, Republic. of Korea on 01-03 September 2010.  
NCMS Chair Dr. Miguel D. Fortes requested the Committee Secretariat during its 8th regular session to coordinate the preliminary arrangements of the NCMS assessment activities for the Calauit Safari Park Project.  The Committee will also inform the local government officials as well as Mr. Mel Velarde, President, UNESCO-MAB Phils. Inc., about this activity.             
 
NCMS-UNESCO Chair at IOC
 
NCMS-UNESCO Philippines Chair Dr. Miguel D. Fortes called the attention of the 25th General Assembly of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to three major Philippine issues through his Interventions on Capacity Development, Ocean Fertilization, and Climate Change. The Assembly was held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France on 15-25 June 2009.

Marine Outreach in Boracay addresses climate change

     

Climate change may soon take away the source of livelihood of people and communities in marine and coastal areas. Unless imperative measures are taken, the grim possibility may be devastating.

Seeing the urgency of the situation, the National Committee on Marine Sciences has adopted the outreach marine programme to enable more marine and coastal communities to access information and innovation that would enhance cooperation of communities in addressing the negative impact of climate change. more

   
   
"Pulutan sa Puerto"
     
The year 2008’s  annual International Coastal Cleanup was transformed into another exciting and fun activity as the University of the Philippines Marine Biological Society (UP MBS) partnered with UNESCO to clean up Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro. more
