In the Education sector, the United Nations has declared 2005 to 2014, the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Through the ESD system of education, children will be conditioned from pre-school to high school to love work and order, be obedient, self-confident and independent. We have responded to this challenge by establishing the Southeast Asian Center for Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development (SEA CLLSD). The Center aims to be a service provider in Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development teacher training, curriculum development and research in the Southeast Asian region.
In the field of Science and Technology, the objective is to mobilize science knowledge and policy for sustainable development by leveraging scientific knowledge for the benefit of the environment and the management of natural resources, and fostering policies and capacity-building in science, technology and innovation. The sub-committees of the National Committee on Marine Sciences (NCMS) and the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Philippines work hand in hand in implementing our science programmes.
The mission of the Social and Human Sciences (SHS) sector is to advance knowledge, define standards and promote intellectual cooperation to support and facilitate social transformations whilst promulgating the values of justice, freedom and respect for human dignity. Our work revolves around ethics and human rights, philosophy and empirical social science research.
Identifying, protecting and preserving World Heritage Sites in the Philippines is a primary concern of the Culture sector. Five outstanding sites are inscribed in the World Heritage List: Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, Baroque Churches of the Philippines, Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, Historic Town of Vigan and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage and documentary heritage (Memory of the World) are also major programmes. We further implement activities in support of creative industries such as crafts, design, publishing, music and cultural performances.
Finally, the Communication Sector empowers people through the free flow of ideas by word and image, press freedom and safety of journalists and by access to information and knowledge. The recently established Information for All Programme Philippine National Committee is dedicated to promoting universal access to information and knowledge for development.
Throughout the years, the NatCom has remained rooted in our fundamental principle that “since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.” (Preamble to the UNESCO Constitution)
I trust that our website will inspire you to unite with us in pursuing the work of UNESCO in the country.
