COMMITTEE NEWS

NatCom culture committee partners with Ballet Manila

Manilans as well as the expatriate community welcomed the world premiere of ballet production Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang which was produced and mounted by Ballet Manila in cooperation with UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines on December 5, 2008. The production captures the classic Filipino tales based on the Anvil Publishing edition of the stories.

As a pioneering effort in ballet, Ballet Manila aims to reintroduce the masterpieces of Philippine literature to the young generation of Filipinos,     highlight the relevance and adaptability of classical dance to traditional Philippine material, and make available alternative, affordable, and significant all-Filipino
entertainment.

Tatlong Kuwento is composed of three stories, namely, Ang Prinsipe ng mga Ibon, Ang Kapatid ng Tatlong Marya and Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin.

The post-production report noted that “For the children, the production breathed life to the fantasy world they imagine in the Lola Basyang stories. They liked how magical kingdoms, animals and creatures (specifically Ang Kapatid ng Tatlong Marya) were transformed from the book versions to ballet interpretations. They were also delighted to the graceful dancing and movements of the dancers.”

The report further noted that “For the adults, the sets and costumes were also praised for being world-class.  Some even cried in the romantic ending of Prinsipe ng mga Ibon where the princess chose to become a bird in the name of love. The more mature in the audience has noted that the ballet crystallizes Ballet Manila’s mission of bringing the performing arts in general and dance in particular closer to the Filipinos. The parents observed that the moral lessons that Lola Basyang stories try to impart were also translated well in the ballets.”
