UNESCO NATCOM Convenes Site Managers of
Philippine World Heritage Sites

The UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines convened the site managers, cultural officers, and representatives of national agencies responsible for the conservation of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines, Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, Historic Town of Vigan, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. Participants from the various sectors gathered  in a National Workshop for World Heritage Site Managers last 04-08 October 2010 in the World Heritage City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The Workshop was the response of the Philippines to its commitment to the World Heritage Centre in submitting the Retrospective Statement of Outstanding Universal Value, Retrospective Cartographic Information (Maps), and the accomplished Periodic Reporting Questionnaire for World Heritage Properties. With UNESCO World Heritage Centre Mentor for Cultural Sites Dr. Richard Engelhardt, UNESCO Bangkok Programme Specialist for Culture Engr. Ricardo Favis, and National Focal Point for World Heritage Concerns Architect Joycelyn Mananghaya, the site managers underwent writing and field exercises to draft the Statements of Outstanding Universal Value of the sites and to conduct a site survey and case study of Vigan City and its conservation measures.

Representatives from the Protected Landscapes and Seascapes of Batanes and Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary were also present during the Workshop. The sites are currently vying for inscription to the World Heritage List.
