Mindanao parks bid for Heritage List

Foreign Affairs Secretary and NatCom Chairman Alberto G. Romulo recently signed the Nomination Dossier of Mount Apo and Mount Hamiguitan.

With the initiative, the parks will hopefully join the current Philippine landmarks, namely, Baroque Churches of the Philippines, Historic Town of Vigan, Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Found in Davao Oriental in southern Philippines, Mount Apo and Mount Hamiguitan are protected sites which have rich biodiversity in terms of flora and fauna per unit area. Both parks are sanctuaries of unique, rare and threatened endemic species of outstanding universal value, notably the critically endangered Philippine Eagle described by no less than aviator Charles Lindberg as the noblest flyer. With the two parks, the Philippines is ranked seventh among the 17 biological rich countries of the world.

The inscription of Mount Apo and Mount Hamiguitan in the World Heritage List will boost Davao Oriental’s bid as eco-tourism destination and help the province in its conservation efforts. Above all, its nomination to the list will increase public awareness of the parks and its outstanding values as a cultural heritage.
