As the country gears for the 2010 Philippine National Elections, the Executive Committee (EXECOM) of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (NatCom) recently issued policy recommendations for the Presidential, Vice Presidential and Senatorial candidates. The recommendations cover three areas, namely, Environment, Human Resource Development and Culture.
The Policy Recommendations underscored the ultimate UN goal of global peace and harmony anchored on justice, freedom and human dignity. It also emphasized that these recommendations seek positive social transformation “within the paradigm of sustainable development for well-being.”
For the environment, candidates’ attention is directed to areas of climate change, heritage conservation and UNESCO world heritage site sustainability.
For human resource development, the document urges candidates to work for a knowledge-based society, communities of inquiry freedom of information policy, national development as a public interest, conversion of Government media network into a public broadcasting system, universal internet access policy, and a broadband bill of rights. The document also called for support to education reform, scientific support for civic and social studies, ICT learning, and enactment of SEA-CLLSD.
For culture, candidates are urged to promote a cultural framework for sustainable development which adapts to multicultural citizens and to promote conduct becoming a Filipino.
