The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has announced that the Philippines’ eSkwela 1.0 (electronic school) project, submitted jointly by the Commission in Information and Communications Technology (CICT) and the Department of Education- Bureau of Alternative Learning Systems (Dep Ed-BALS), has been awarded an honourable mention in the 2010 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education.
The eSkwela 1.0 project provides youth and adult learners with opportunities for digital literacy paired with the acquisition of life skills and livelihood skills as well as completion of their basic education requirements with a localized e-learning content through a network of 40 community-based e-learning centers. The Philippines will be given a diploma at the awarding ceremony to be held on 12 January 2011 at UNESCO Headquarters.
UNESCO Natcom supported the nomination of CICT and DepEd-BALS to the said Prize. The 2010 Laureates are UK's National Institute of Adult Continuing Education and Venezuela's Infocentro Foundation.
