DR. VIRG&NIA A. MIRALAO
Dr. Virginia A. Miralao is a sociologist. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree
in Sociology from the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1964. With a Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship, she earned a Master of Arts degree in the same university in 1971. She pursued her doctoral studies at the Cornell University in llhaca, New York under a Fulbright Grant, with additional fieldwork and dissertation support from the Ford Foundation and Cornell University's Southeast Asia Program. She obtained her PhD in Sociology from Cornell in 1981, with a major in Social Demography and minors in Rural Sociology and Southeast Asian Studies.
Dr. Miralao joined the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) as Chairman of
its Governing Council in 1995 and became PSSC Executive Director in 1996. She retired from PSSC in December 2009. It was during her 15 years as PSSC Executive Director that she also concurrently served as Secretary-General of the Association or Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC); Commissioner of the Social and Human Sciences Committee of the UNESCO National Commission (NatCom): and the Philippines Representative to and Rapporteur of the Intergovernmental Council of the Management of Social Transformations Prog mme of the Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO Paris.
For her professional a achievements and contributions to the development of the
Philippines' social sciences, the University of the Philippines Alumni Association
conferred UP's Outstanding Professional Award in Social Science to Dr. Miralao
in 2007. |
